About the Winery

Surh Cellars has made small-batch wines in Napa Valley since 1992. Production stays very small, usually no more than a few hundred cases of each wine, and the winery calls its wines truly handcrafted. Over the years the list has covered more than a dozen varieties, from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to Zinfandel, Syrah, Viognier and Chardonnay, made in a style the winery says has moved from rustic to refined.

The aim, in the winery's words, is balanced yet concentrated wines that show the fruit and character of the vintage and region, meant for the dinner table. Hillside Cabernets get a long cold soak and extended maceration; the Pinot Noirs are made in small fermentors with very little racking. Some fruit is grown by Surh itself, and the rest comes from long-term growers in Napa Valley, on the Sonoma Coast and in Dry Creek Valley.

There is no Surh winery to visit. The wines pour at Vintner's Collective, the shared tasting room for a group of small family wineries on Main Street in downtown Napa, in an Italianate former saloon and brothel built in 1875. You can drop in at the bar or book a seated tasting upstairs. The room pours a rotating selection from its member wineries, so we ask for Surh's wines when we book.

Tasting Fees

$50 for The No. 1, five wines at the indoor bar, about 45 minutes, no reservation needed. $100 for The No. 2, a seated tasting of reserve wines upstairs, by appointment. $250 for The No. 3, with sparkling wine, cheese, charcuterie and chocolates, by appointment. These are Vintner's Collective fees.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
