About the Winery

Sounds is a Chardonnay-only label from vignerons Lauren Strojny and Jason Exposto, based in St. Helena. Wine Spectator covered the launch in August 2026, describing two winemakers who left established careers to focus on Chardonnay from coastal sites; the first vintage was 2023. They handle every step themselves, working by feel, with natural fermentations and barrel aging.

The fruit comes from what Sounds calls "cool, windswept sites to elevated mountain peaks" along the California coast, chosen for their coastal influence. Wine Spectator describes a crystalline style that balances richness with tension, made with minimalist cellar practices.

Sounds sells to its mailing list, and there is no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. Since Chardonnay is the whole story, the day below visits estates that take it seriously: a Silverado Trail cave pouring Chardonnay and Cabernet, and Stony Hill, making Chardonnay on Spring Mountain since the 1950s.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Alila Napa Valley or Inn St. Helena.

10:00 · Pickup at Alila Napa Valley or Inn St. Helena

Since Sounds does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do, with Chardonnay at every stop. Alila Napa Valley and Inn St. Helena, both in St. Helena, are about 15 minutes from the first stop on the Silverado Trail. The day fits in about five and a half hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Parable Wines

About 15 minutes away. A young Chardonnay and Cabernet house on the Silverado Trail pouring five current releases with a cheese and charcuterie plate in its estate wine cave, which survived the Glass Fire. By appointment; we allow about an hour, and the fee is confirmed when we book.

11:35 · Stony Hill Vineyard

About 15 minutes away. A Spring Mountain estate founded by Fred and Eleanor McCrea, reached by a short climb off Highway 29 and known for Chardonnay made since the 1950s. Taste of Stony Hill is $75, up to an hour. By reservation.

12:50 · Lunch at Gott's Roadside

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Gott's Roadside on Main Street in St. Helena, the roadside restaurant Joel Gott co-founded in 1999, known for burgers, ahi tacos and a California wine list, open daily from 11 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:00 · Strala Vineyards

About 8 minutes away. A husband-and-wife label from a leading vineyard manager and a barrel expert, poured with food and art at the Brasswood Estate north of St. Helena. The Classic Tasting is $75 (a cheese plate is $25 more); we allow about an hour. By advance reservation at 10 a.m., noon or 2 p.m.

3:00 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 3:15 p.m., a little over five hours after pickup.

About $150 per person for Stony Hill ($75) and Strala ($75), paid directly to each winery, plus the Parable fee, confirmed when we book.

Stony Hill is open Thursday to Monday, and Strala's afternoon tasting starts at 2 p.m. and needs 48 hours' notice, so plan this day for Thursday to Monday. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
