About the Winery

Second Line is owned and run by husband and wife Chris Agan and Patrice "TC" Whelan. After careers in the US Navy and aerospace, Chris earned a UC Davis certificate in viticulture and enology, worked a harvest internship at Joseph Phelps, and started Second Line in 2017 with a few barrels while working for Mike Hirby at Relic Cellars. TC handles compliance and marketing and, the winery says, brings an excellent palate for blending.

The name honors New Orleans: the Second Line is the crowd of revelers that follows the brass band in a street parade, handkerchiefs and parasols in the air. The wines carry the same spirit, from L'Acadiane Albariño and Mardi Gras Grenache to Serenity Syrah, Brioso Petit Verdot and Big Chief Cabernet. Production has grown to about 800 cases a year.

There are two ways to taste. The Wine Thief, a small vintner-owned collective tasting room across from Oxbow Public Market, pours Second Line at the bar or in a private tasting arranged ahead. Or Chris hosts a private tasting of five current releases with a cheese and charcuterie plate for up to eight guests, arranged by phone or email. Either way, the people pouring made the wine or know who did.

Tasting Fees

Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. Neither The Wine Thief nor Second Line publishes its tasting prices.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:45 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Archer Hotel Napa or Andaz Napa.

10:45 · Pickup at Archer Hotel Napa or Andaz Napa

The Wine Thief opens at 11 a.m., so pickup is a little later than usual. Both hotels are in downtown Napa, a few minutes from First Street. The day below runs about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

11:00 · Second Line Wines

A tasting of Second Line at The Wine Thief, or Chris's private tasting of five wines with cheese and charcuterie if he can host. We allow about an hour and confirm the fee when we book.

12:20 · Robinson Family Vineyards

About 18 minutes away. A family estate built against the Stags Leap Palisades, where a Robinson hosts every private tour and seated tasting. The tasting of four current releases is $65, about 1 hour 15 minutes. By appointment, Tuesday to Saturday, with the last start at 2:45 p.m.

1:50 · Lunch at Mustards Grill

About 12 minutes away. Lunch at Mustards Grill on Highway 29 just north of Yountville, a Napa Valley favorite for more than 40 years, open daily for lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

3:10 · Elyse Winery

About 8 minutes away. A small Hoffman Lane winery making vineyard-designate Zinfandel and Cabernet since 1985, poured in a casual, intimate room south of Yountville. Tastings are $75 and up; we plan about an hour. By appointment.

4:10 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:30 p.m., under six hours after pickup.

About $140 per person in published tasting fees (Robinson and Elyse from $75), paid directly to each winery; the Second Line tasting fee is confirmed when we book.

The Wine Thief is open Thursday to Monday and Robinson hosts Tuesday to Saturday, so plan this day for a Thursday, Friday or Saturday (or ask Chris for a private tasting on another day). Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
