Founder Mark Albrecht started Roots Run Deep in 2005 to prove that great Napa Valley wine could be exceptional and accessible. He had spent decades in wine bars, shops, restaurants and national retail, including building the wine program at Cost Plus World Market. There were no inherited vineyards and no investors: to fund the first vintage, Mark sold his house and nearly everything in it.
That first wine, Educated Guess Napa County Cabernet Sauvignon, became the foundation of the brand and has been named the top-selling Napa Valley Cabernet under $50. The portfolio now runs from Educated Guess through the site-specific Hypothesis wines to the limited Higher Education reserves. Winemaker Macario Montoya joined in 2017 after a decade as assistant winemaker at Piña in Rutherford.
The Tasting Salon is in a 125-year-old Craftsman-style house on First Street, cozy and polished, with guided tastings that include small-production bottles you won't find elsewhere. It is reserved mainly for wine club and subscription members, by appointment; non-member reservations are offered on a very limited basis. We ask well ahead and confirm the time and fee for you.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. Salon tastings are a membership benefit; non-member pricing is not published.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
