A family-run hillside Cabernet vineyard on the slopes of Howell Mountain, with views toward Mount St. Helena, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Bryan and Andrea Rahn bought this hillside property on the slopes of Howell Mountain in 1999 and planted Cabernet Sauvignon in 2001. Bryan has worked in viticulture since the 1980s, and the family designed, developed and farms the vineyard themselves. Their children, Dylan and Hannah, grew up working in vineyards; Hannah now makes the wine, and Dylan farms alongside his father.
The vineyard is about four and a half acres in three blocks, each named for a family member. Andrea's block sits closest to the house, Dylan's has deep volcanic soils, and Hannah's, the highest, looks over the vineyard, the forest and Mount St. Helena. The site lies just below the Howell Mountain AVA line, so the wine is labeled Napa Valley; production is about 200 cases.
This is about as personal as Napa gets. The Rahns' website says you're welcome to visit and lists office hours six days a week, while their tasting room has been under construction. We arrange the visit with the family and plan about an hour; the format and any fee are confirmed when we book.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Meadowood or Alila Napa Valley.
Meadowood, the resort east of St. Helena at the foot of Howell Mountain, is about 15 minutes from Rahn Estate, and Alila Napa Valley, a Hyatt resort in downtown St. Helena, about 20 minutes, so from Alila we leave a few minutes early. About 15 minutes away. Randy Dunn's family winery high on Howell Mountain, famous for long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon. The $125 visit walks the vineyards and caves and ends with a seated tasting of several vintages; we allow about 90 minutes. By appointment, Monday to Friday, requested more than three business days ahead; groups up to six.
About 25 minutes down the mountain. Lunch at The Charter Oak in St. Helena, Christopher and Martina Kostow's family-style New American restaurant, open daily from 11:30 a.m. (11 a.m. on weekends). Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 15 minutes north. A family estate on the Silverado Trail in Calistoga, born from a weekly date night, with tastings in its Winery and Tasting Barn. $95 for current releases, waived with the purchase of three bottles of Phifer Pavitt Cabernet Sauvignon. By appointment, morning or afternoon; we allow about an hour.
Back by about 4:05 p.m., about six hours after pickup.
About $220 per person in tasting fees for Dunn and Phifer Pavitt, paid directly to each winery, plus Rahn Estate's fee, if any, confirmed when we book.
Dunn hosts Monday to Friday, so this day fits a weekday. The Rahns set the visit time, and we adjust the day around it.
