About the Winery
PlumpJack began in 1992 as a wine shop in San Francisco's Cow Hollow neighborhood, founded by Gavin Newsom. The estate winery followed in Oakville in 1995. The name comes from Sir John "Plump Jack" Falstaff, the fun-loving Shakespeare character who shared many goblets of sack with Prince Hal, and that playful spirit still runs through the place.
The 42-acre estate sits on an alluvial fan at the foot of the Vaca Mountains in the Oakville AVA, with rocky hillside soils on the east side and lighter loam toward the river. The winery itself dates to 1881 and sits in the middle of the vineyard among old oaks. PlumpJack was also a pioneer in putting screw caps on luxury Cabernet.
Visits feel relaxed rather than formal. Guests stroll past the 1880s winery and taste estate Oakville and Napa Valley wines, from the hour-long PlumpJack Experience to the Collector's Tasting with the Reserve Cabernet. It is an easy first stop for us, just off Highway 29 on Oakville Cross Road, and the sister estates Odette and 13th Vineyard are part of the same collection.

$80 for the PlumpJack Experience, 60 minutes. $120 for The Collector's Tasting with the Reserve Cabernet, 90 minutes. $200+ for the PlumpJack Collection Passport, about 6 hours across three estates with a box lunch.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

The PlumpJack Experience, about an hour ($80). The Collector's Tasting ($120) runs 90 minutes and moves the rest of the day back 30 minutes.

About 18 minutes away. A small family label from a hillside vineyard above the valley, poured in private, seated tastings at The Caves at Soda Canyon. The Private Tasting is $95; the winery does not publish a duration, so we plan about an hour. Prepaid, by appointment only; no same-day requests.

About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Oenotri on First Street in downtown Napa, an Italian restaurant serving lunch daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About 15 minutes away. A family-owned Yountville winery known for its research into single-clone Cabernet Sauvignon. The Grape to Glass Tour and Tasting is $60, about 90 minutes, and walks you through the winery before the seated pour. By appointment, daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
