Jon Jones studied music before wine took over, and he still talks about winemaking in terms of harmony and balance. After enology work at Robert Mondavi, Merryvale and Opus One, he crafted Paravel's first vintage in 2011, a 100% vineyard-designate Howell Mountain Petite Sirah from Henry Brothers Ranch, and released it in 2013. The name comes from the castle in the world of Narnia in C.S. Lewis's books.
The family planted its own vineyard on Howell Mountain in 2016, on an east-facing slope at 1,930 feet in a swale of pine forest with black oaks and madrones, and grafted it to Petite Sirah in June 2017. The soil is cobbly loam over porous volcanic tuff, scattered with pine needles and acorns. Jaime Jones tends the vines, and one of the Henry brothers drew the label, cork and capsule art.
Today the lineup includes Petite Sirah, a Proprietary Red of Howell Mountain Cabernet and Petite Sirah, Howell Mountain Zinfandel and Merlot, and several rosés. Jon is also a consulting winemaker for AMPL and Bartlett Family Vineyards. Wines are ordered through the website or by email, and Paravel publishes no tours or tastings, so the day below visits three estates nearby that do host.
Paravel does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 9:55 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Meadowood or Alila Napa Valley.
Since Paravel does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. The first tasting is at 10:30 at Robert Foley, near the top of Howell Mountain, about 20 minutes from Meadowood and about 25 from Alila Napa Valley. The day runs about six and a half hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 25 minutes up the mountain. Acclaimed winemaker Bob Foley's small family winery near the top of Howell Mountain, where more than 1,000 barrels rest in a cave completed in 2008 and the permit allows only 10 guests a day. The tasting is $50, about an hour, with one fee refunded for every six bottles. By appointment, usually Thursday to Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
About 10 minutes away. A small family estate at 1,900 feet on Howell Mountain, with a new tasting room and seated tastings on a knoll above a canyon. The fee is paid at check-in and confirmed when we book; we allow about an hour. By reservation, with seatings at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. on most days.
About 25 minutes down the mountain. Northern Italian cooking at Cook St. Helena on Main Street, a small local favorite open for lunch Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 8 minutes away. The historic Inglewood Estate west of St. Helena, where an Estate Ambassador leads you through the winery and vineyard and out to a private lake and gardens before a seated tasting. $75 to $100, about 90 minutes. By reservation only.
Back by about 4:30 p.m., about six and a half hours after pickup.
About $125 to $150 per person in tasting fees for Robert Foley and Sinegal, plus Spence's fee, which is paid at check-in and confirmed when we book; each is paid directly to the winery.
Robert Foley usually hosts Thursday to Saturday at 10:30 a.m., and Cook serves lunch Monday to Friday, so this day fits a Thursday or Friday; on a Saturday we choose another St. Helena lunch spot. Sinegal does not publish its tasting days, so we confirm them when we book.
