OVID Napa Valley

About the Winery

OVID takes its name from the Roman poet of the Metamorphoses. In 2000 David Abreu, one of Napa Valley's most celebrated vineyard managers, planned and planted the estate on an untouched plot 1,349 feet up Pritchard Hill, in one-acre blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Architect Howard Backen designed the winery. In 2017 the Duncan family, owners of Silver Oak and Twomey, bought a majority share.

Every red begins and ends on the single organically farmed vineyard, on thin volcanic soils along the valley's eastern ridge, above the marine layer. Pritchard Hill has no official appellation of its own, so the wines carry the Napa Valley AVA. Winemaker Austin Peterson started as enologist under Andy Erickson in 2006 and has led the winemaking since 2010. Besides the OVID red, the estate makes Hexameter, a Syrah and Loc. Cit.

Visits are private and prepaid through Tock. The OVID Napa Valley Experience explores the vineyard, winery and cellar before the wines; the Estate Vineyard 4x4 Tour takes up to three guests through the high vineyard blocks, and Into the Evening is a relaxed tasting on the porch with sweeping views. Pritchard Hill is a winding drive up from the Silverado Trail, so we build in the time.

Tasting Fees

$200 for the Estate Vineyard 4x4 Tour & Tasting, 90 minutes, and $200 for Into the Evening at OVID, a 60-minute tasting on the porch. $200 to $300 for the OVID Napa Valley Experience, a private 90-minute look at the vineyard, winery, cellar and wines.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 9:50 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Meadowood or Auberge du Soleil.

9:50 · Pickup at Meadowood or Auberge du Soleil

The drive up Pritchard Hill takes a while, so we pick up at 9:50. Meadowood, a resort at the foot of Howell Mountain, and Auberge du Soleil, on Rutherford Hill, are each about 20 to 25 minutes from OVID. This day runs about seven hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · OVID Napa Valley

The OVID Napa Valley Experience, about 90 minutes ($200 to $300): vineyard, winery and cellar, then the wines. Groups of up to three can take the 4x4 vineyard tour instead ($200, 90 minutes), and the rest of the day stays the same.

12:10 · Seavey Vineyard

About 25 minutes away. A small family estate in Conn Valley that has never bought a grape, with a private walk through the stone winery and cave before a vertical tasting of five estate wines. The Vintage Tasting & Tour is $125, 60 to 90 minutes. By prepaid reservation, with visit times from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

1:50 · Lunch at Forum at Meadowood

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Forum, the main restaurant at Meadowood, with seasonal dishes drawn from the Meadowood farm. Lunch is served Monday to Friday, with brunch on weekends until 3 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

3:10 · Quintessa

About 15 minutes away. A 280-acre Biodynamic estate of rolling hills, oaks and a lake on the east side of Rutherford; the Communal Estate Experience pairs a vineyard walk with a seated tasting ($125, about 90 minutes). By appointment, Thursday to Monday, with visits until 3:30 p.m.; 21 and over.

4:40 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:55 p.m., about seven hours after pickup.

About $450 to $550 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Quintessa hosts Thursday to Monday, and Forum serves lunch on weekdays with brunch on weekends, so plan this day for Thursday through Monday. It runs about seven hours; we can shorten it by dropping the last stop.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
