Rocco Morisoli left Switzerland and reached Napa in 1883, and the family has farmed on Niebaum Lane in Rutherford since 1902. During Prohibition, Plinio Morisoli kept the vines alive by selling grapes for sacramental wine; he and his wife, Clementine, also ran the Rutherford General Store, on the site of today's Rutherford Grill. Fourth-generation Gary Morisoli and his son Chris, a former Army MEDEVAC pilot, farm the vineyard today with original tractors and a French plow.
The 53-acre vineyard sits at the base of Mount St. John on the Rutherford Bench, in the Rutherford AVA. Its two-acre Old Block, planted in the 1910s, is one of only nine Napa Valley sites planted before 1920, according to the Historic Vineyard Society. For decades the fruit has gone to wineries such as Elyse, Etude, Nickel & Nickel and Hourglass, and a 1990 Whitehall Lane Morisoli Cabernet was named one of the world's top 10 Cabernets by Wine Spectator.
In 2018 the family made its first wine for sale, with winemaker Joel Aiken, formerly of Beaulieu Vineyard, and the 2019 Cabernet was number 100 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2023. Less than two percent of the grapes go into Morisoli's own Cabernet and Old Block Zinfandel, offered through the mailing list. The vineyard is a working farm and does not host visitors. The day below takes you to wineries nearby that do, including two that make Morisoli wines.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Bardessono or Hotel Villagio.
Since Morisoli does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do, starting with one that has made Morisoli Zinfandel for decades. Bardessono and Hotel Villagio are both in Yountville, about 5 minutes from the first stop. The day runs about six and a quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 5 minutes away. The Coursen family's small winery on Hoffman Lane, which started out with Zinfandel from the Morisoli Vineyard and still makes it. Prepaid tastings are $75 to $200 depending on the wines; we plan about an hour. By appointment, with times from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
About 18 minutes away. A young family label of heritage-vineyard Cabernet, poured with artisan cheeses at Wheeler Farms on Zinfandel Lane. The Tasting Experience is $150, about 90 minutes. By appointment through the winery's request form; days and times are confirmed when the team accepts.
About 8 minutes away. Lunch at Market, an American restaurant in a historic brick and stone building on Main Street in St. Helena, open for lunch Monday to Saturday from noon. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 15 minutes away. The Smith family's winery built into the mountainside at the Blueline estate, designed by Olle Lundberg. Visits are $150 per person for new guests, waived with three bottles per person. By appointment only; the time and length are confirmed with the appointment.
Back by about 4:20 p.m., about six and a quarter hours after pickup.
About $375 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Market serves lunch Monday to Saturday; on Sundays we choose another lunch spot. Annulus and Hourglass confirm their times when they accept the request. Back by about 4:20 p.m.
