Calistoga · Napa Valley
Photographer Matt Morris's Charbono, a rare Napa heritage grape, from two Calistoga vineyards farmed by the same families for about a century, made with Françoise Peschon. Matt Morris does not receive visitors; here is what to know, and a day at sought-after estates nearby that do host.

Matt Morris moved to Napa Valley in 2013, working as a director and photographer alongside vintners. In 2014, over a late-night bottle, he wondered what Charbono would become if it got the care usually given to great Cabernet. The one-time experiment turned into a passion project. Charbono was once widely planted and highly regarded in Napa; Morris notes that fewer than 65 acres survive.
Françoise Peschon, formerly the winemaker at Araujo, shepherds the wines. The fruit comes from two Calistoga vineyards, each in the same family for about a century, with Charbono vines approaching 40 years old: Shypoke, cared for by Peter Heitz, and Tofanelli, cared for by Vince Tofanelli. Each gets its own bottling, and Heritage blends Charbono with other old varieties.
The wines are sold through the purchase page on the Matt Morris website. There is no tasting room or visiting program, so Matt Morris Wines does not receive visitors. The day below stays in Calistoga, not far from the Tofanelli and Shypoke vines, with three estates that do host and lunch in north St. Helena.
Matt Morris Wines does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
