About the Winery

Localism started with a tasting trip in 2008 that changed two lives. The founders loved the wine, but also the low-key, unpretentious feel around it, and asked on the drive home how to build a life around that. Two years later they moved to Napa Valley and started Localism. The first wine was a Cabernet Sauvignon from a one-acre parcel in Coombsville, and it is still made today.

The list is small and a little unexpected: Coombsville Cabernet, a rosé of Carneros Pinot Noir, Petaluma Gap Pinot Noir, and white grapes rarely seen in California, such as Kerner from Lodi and Falanghina from the Delta. Every label carries an eco-abstract painting by local artist Mary Vaughan. The winery's line is 'everything but exclusive', and its free release list, The Table, has no commitment.

Localism has no tasting room of its own. It is a member of Vintner's Collective, the bonded tasting room for a small group of family wineries, in an 1875 Italianate building on Main Street that was once a saloon and brothel. Guests taste at the bar or upstairs in a seated room. Ask for Localism when booking, since each flight is chosen from the members' wines.

Tasting Fees

At Vintner's Collective: $50 for The No. 1, five wines at the bar, about 45 minutes, no reservation needed. $100 for The No. 2, a seated reserve tasting upstairs, by appointment (cheese and charcuterie $25 extra). $250 for The No. 3, with sparkling wine, cheese, charcuterie and chocolates, by appointment.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Andaz Napa or Westin Verasa Napa.

10:00 · Pickup at Andaz Napa or Westin Verasa Napa

Both hotels are in downtown Napa, about 10 minutes from the first stop in Carneros. Vintner's Collective seats its upstairs tastings at set times, so this day saves Localism for the 3:30 p.m. seating. The day runs a little under seven hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Hyde Vineyards Estate

About 10 minutes away. Larry Hyde's Carneros vineyard, planted in 1979 and long a source for other wineries, now pouring its own Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on a vineyard terrace. The estate tasting is $75, about 75 minutes. By prior reservation, daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

11:55 · Patland Estate Vineyards

About 24 minutes away. A family winery that walks guests through the twists and turns of The Caves at Soda Canyon and ends with one of the valley's great views. The Patland Caves Experience is $75, about 90 minutes. By appointment, at least 24 hours ahead.

1:45 · Lunch at Bistro Don Giovanni

About 17 minutes away. Lunch at Bistro Don Giovanni, an Italian restaurant among the vineyards on Howard Lane, a valley favorite for more than 30 years, open daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

3:30 · Localism Wines at Vintner's Collective

About 10 minutes away. The No. 2, a seated reserve tasting upstairs ($100, by appointment), with Localism requested in the flight. The No. 1 at the bar ($50, about 45 minutes) needs no reservation. We allow about 75 minutes.

4:45 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:55 p.m., just under seven hours after pickup.

About $200 to $250 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Vintner's Collective seats its upstairs tastings at 11 a.m., 12:30, 2, 3:30 and 5 p.m. (other times by phone), so this day uses the 3:30 seating and runs just under seven hours. For a six-hour day, skip Patland and arrive for the 2 p.m. seating after lunch.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
