Lou Kapcsándy left his native Hungary for the United States in 1956 and built a career in chemical engineering and manufacturing. In 1998, after a visit to Léoville-Las Cases in Bordeaux, he and his wife Bobbie set out to start a wine business with their son, Louis Jr. In May 2000 they bought a 20-acre parcel in the Yountville AVA that had been one of the sources of Beringer's Private Reserve Cabernet.
The family replanted the State Lane Vineyard in 2002 into 15 blocks, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, at about 2,600 vines per acre, four times denser than is typical in Napa Valley. Satellite imagery from NASA helped set the row direction. Every wine is estate grown and labeled State Lane Vineyard, and the winery and residence run on solar power.
Visits are by appointment, Tuesday through Saturday at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. Each one begins with a short tour of the vineyard and the winery, finished in 2005, followed by a seated tasting in an intimate setting. Plan on about two hours. Since Lou's passing in 2021, Louis Jr. has carried on the family's work.
$175 per person for the vineyard and winery tour with a seated tasting, about two hours.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
