Napa · Napa Valley
James and Janet Moss's small family Cabernet winery in south Napa's Crusher District, with salon-style tastings in a fountain courtyard and a look at the cellar, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

James and Janet Moss made their first barrel of wine together in their garage in 1998 and poured it at their own wedding. They founded J. Moss in 2001. Janet earned her winemaking degree while James worked nights and weekends in the cellar, learning from Napa winemakers Mark Jessup and Gustavo Brambila. The family still hand-selects every vineyard block and watches over every barrel.
In 2010 they opened their own winery and tasting room in the Crusher District, an urban pocket of small wineries in south Napa near the Crush statue, and the first stop in wine country for anyone driving up from the Bay Area. The focus is Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Chardonnay, Merlot, Petite Sirah, red and white blends and a rosé, all in small lots.
The visit is relaxed and personal: a seated, salon-style tasting of five wines in the fountain courtyard or the small tasting room, hosted by a wine associate and, when he is in, by James himself. Afterward you walk through the production area to see where the wine is made. The vineyards are elsewhere, so this is a winery visit rather than a vineyard walk.
$50 per person for a seated tasting of five wines, 60 to 75 minutes including a visit to the production area.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

About 12 minutes away. Comfort food in a red barn at Carneros Resort and Spa, named for Carneros pioneer Boon Fly, open daily. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 6 minutes away. A 2,000-acre Carneros ranch of vineyards, Tuscan olives, heritage livestock and lakes looking toward San Pablo Bay. A private outdoor tasting by appointment; we allow about 90 minutes, and any fee is confirmed by the ranch.
About 20 minutes away. A Coombsville hillside estate whose winery is built underground between the vines and an oak grove. A private visit by advance inquiry, one party at a time; we plan about an hour, and any fee is confirmed by the estate.
Back by about 4:45 p.m., about six hours after pickup.
About $50 per person in tasting fees for J. Moss, plus the fees for Hudson Ranch and Covert Estate (confirmed when we book), paid directly to each winery.
J. Moss hosts Friday to Sunday only. Lunch comes before the second winery so the day flows from the 11 a.m. seating.
