Calistoga · Napa Valley
A Calistoga partnership making Cabernet and Petite Sirah with a 26-year Groth veteran at prices meant not to break the bank, tasted by appointment on Lincoln Avenue, and a suggested six-hour day around it.
Book a Six-Hour Wine Tour
Hindsight began about a decade ago as a partnership with an unusual goal for Napa Valley: top-quality wine at prices that don't break the bank. The owners include managing director Seth Gersch, a former financial executive, and Dr. Alisa Gean, a UCSF professor emeritus and sommelier, with industry veteran William Boykin running national sales.
Winemaker Michael Weis spent 26 years at Groth Vineyards after roles at Robert Mondavi and Vichon, and his wines have appeared seven times on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list. The family vineyard on Mora Avenue in the Calistoga AVA grows Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, and the lineup runs from a white Blanc and Chardonnay to Cabernet, Petite Sirah, proprietary blends and CY7, made with the Roger Clemens Foundation.
There is no Hindsight tasting room of its own. The winery lists its wine tasting at 1124 Lincoln Avenue in downtown Calistoga, home of Vault Wine + Artifacts, and tastings are by appointment. We set the appointment for the afternoon, when that room is open, and pair it with two estates outside town so the day still covers real ground.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. Hindsight does not publish a tasting fee, and the Lincoln Avenue room does not post its prices online.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Good to Know
Plan a Thursday to Monday afternoon, when the Lincoln Avenue room is open. Wines are sold online and through the mailing list. Ages, group size and pets are confirmed when we book.
Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Four Seasons Napa Valley or Dr. Wilkinson's. The Lincoln Avenue room opens at 12:30 p.m., so Hindsight comes after lunch.
Four Seasons Napa Valley, on the Silverado Trail just outside Calistoga, and Dr. Wilkinson's, the mud bath resort on Lincoln Avenue, are each about 8 to 10 minutes from Joseph Cellars. Because Hindsight's tasting room opens at 12:30 p.m., we start at Joseph Cellars and taste Hindsight after lunch. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 10 minutes away. The Bartholomew family's estate on Highway 29 south of Calistoga, where the Palisades Experience pairs a private seated tasting in the club lounge or on the patio, looking out at the Palisades, with a walk through 12,000 square feet of caves. $75, about 75 minutes. Open daily 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. by reservation.
About 15 minutes away. Classic American fare at picnic tables on Main Street in St. Helena, open daily from 11 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 18 minutes away. A tasting of Hindsight's Cabernet, Petite Sirah and blends by appointment at the Lincoln Avenue room Hindsight lists for tastings, home to Vault Wine + Artifacts. We allow about an hour; the fee is confirmed when we book.
About 15 minutes away. A family winery on Highway 29 north of St. Helena, pouring estate wines from a family with more than 120 years in the valley. The Napa Estate Tasting is $60, five wines in 60 to 90 minutes. Open Thursday to Monday; last tasting at 3:30 p.m. Reservations recommended.
Back by about 4:05 p.m., about six hours after pickup.
About $135 per person in tasting fees for Joseph Cellars and Ballentine, plus Hindsight's fee, which is confirmed when we book; each paid directly to the winery.
Hindsight's Lincoln Avenue room and Ballentine are both closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so this day works Thursday to Monday.
