About the Winery

Heibel Ranch is a 185-acre family ranch in the Aetna Springs area of Pope Valley, over the hills from St. Helena. Owner and winemaker Trent Ghiringhelli's grandfather, George Heibel, bought the nearby Aetna Springs Resort in the 1940s. Trent, who worked at ZD Wines, planted the vineyard on the family land, and the 2006 Lappa's was the winery's first blend.

The vineyard is tiny: about an acre of Cabernet Sauvignon, half an acre of Zinfandel and a little over a quarter acre of Petite Sirah, farmed sustainably from the start and watered by gravity from tanks above the vines. It yields about 250 to 300 cases a year, bottled as Napa Valley blends named for family, like Lappa's, GBH and Captain Bubba.

There is no tasting room. Visits are a private Back Country Tour of a couple of hours, hosted by owner and winemaker Trent (and, as the winery puts it, Chachi): a walk through the vineyard, a ride in Sugar Magnolia, the family's 1963 Willys jeep, out to a picnic spot, and the wines with a salami, cheese and olive spread, all outdoors. The winery calls it an old school Napa Valley wine experience. We confirm current tour details when we book.

Tasting Fees

$125 per person for the Back Country Tour, about two hours, with wines and a salami, cheese and olive assortment. Wine club members pay half. We confirm the current price when we book.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 9:30 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Meadowood or Harvest Inn. The ranch is about 40 minutes over the hills, so we leave early for the two-hour tour.

9:30 · Pickup at Meadowood or Harvest Inn

Heibel Ranch sits at the north end of Pope Valley, about 40 minutes over Howell Mountain from Meadowood, a resort at the foot of Howell Mountain in St. Helena, and from Harvest Inn, a vineyard-side resort at the south end of St. Helena. Pickup moves up to 9:30 so the two-hour ranch tour can start around 10:10, and the day is planned around two wineries because the drive to the ranch is part of it. Extra time can be added by the hour.

10:10 · Heibel Ranch Vineyards

The Back Country Tour, about two hours ($125 per person), hosted by the owner and winemaker, with a jeep ride out to the picnic spot. It includes a salami, cheese and olive assortment, so a later lunch works well.

12:50 · Amulet Estate

About 40 minutes away. A small hillside estate in the Crystal Springs area at the base of Howell Mountain, where a private, winemaker-led tour of the vineyards, cellar and winery ends with a tasting in the estate's cave. The Private Tour & Tasting is $100 per person (taken as a deposit when you book); plan on about 90 minutes. By appointment, for 2 to 12 guests.

2:35 · Lunch at The Charter Oak

About 12 minutes away. A late lunch, since the ranch tour includes a salami, cheese and olive assortment, at The Charter Oak in St. Helena, Christopher and Martina Kostow's family-style New American restaurant, open daily from 11:30 a.m. (11 a.m. on weekends). Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

3:20 · Back to your hotel

Back by 3:30 p.m., six hours after pickup.

About $225 per person in tasting fees for the two wineries, paid directly to each winery.

The winery's website lists Heibel Ranch tours on weekends or weekday afternoons, so the day above suits a weekend. On a weekday we move the ranch tour to the afternoon and visit Amulet first.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
