H. William Harlan's 240-acre hillside estate in the western hills of Oakville, visited only by private request, and a suggested day of tasting around it.

H. William Harlan founded Harlan Estate in 1984 in the western hills of Oakville. The estate covers 240 acres above the Oakville benchlands, rising from 225 to 1,225 feet, and only about forty acres are planted to vines. His son Will Harlan is managing director, Bob Levy was the founding winemaker, and Cory Empting makes the wine today.
Most of the property is left wild. The vineyards are all hillside, on volcanic and sedimentary bedrock, with terraces and closely spaced vines on spare soils facing every direction. The blocks are planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a little Petit Verdot. The estate's own writing treats its winery buildings as part of the land itself.
Harlan Estate has no public tasting room and publishes no visit program or fee; its website lists only a phone number and email. Visits are by private request only, at the estate's discretion, and we make that request on your behalf. If the estate cannot host on your date, we build the day around its Oakville neighbors instead.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Good to Know
There is no walk-in tasting room and nothing is guaranteed: the estate decides whether it can host, when and in what format. Ages, group size and any fee are confirmed by the estate if a visit is arranged.
Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Rancho Caymus Inn or Bardessono.
Rancho Caymus Inn, a Spanish-style inn at the Rutherford crossroads, is about 10 minutes from the Oakville Grade, and Bardessono, a garden hotel in Yountville, is about 12 minutes away. This day runs a little over six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
A private visit, only if the estate agrees to host on your date. We plan about an hour and a quarter; the time, format and any fee are set by the estate.
About 15 minutes away. A 280-acre Biodynamic estate of rolling hills, oaks and a lake on the east side of Rutherford; guests walk the vineyard before a seated tasting, and the open-air pavilion is a favorite. The Communal Estate Experience is $125 and the private Estate Experience $175, each about 90 minutes. By appointment, Thursday to Monday, with visits until 3:30 p.m.; 21 and over.
About 12 minutes away. Lunch at Brix on Highway 29, with a daily-changing farm-to-table menu drawn from its own gardens; lunch is served 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Tuesdays. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 15 minutes away. The Halls' hillside estate above Rutherford, with a brick-lined wine cave and the Chandelier Room at its heart. The private Valley View Tasting in the upstairs salon is $125 for 60 to 75 minutes; estate and cave tours run $150 to $300. Open daily by reservation; 21 and over.
Back by about 4:25 p.m., a little over six hours after pickup.
About $250 to $300 per person in tasting fees for Quintessa and HALL Rutherford, paid directly to each winery, plus any fee Harlan Estate sets if it hosts you.
Quintessa hosts Thursday to Monday and Brix is closed Tuesdays, so this day works best Thursday through Monday. It runs about six and a half hours with three tastings and lunch; we can shorten it by dropping the last stop.
Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
