About the Winery

Chris and Jessica Zazo founded Hailstone, and their first release was the 2012 Impact Cabernet Sauvignon. The name comes from Chris's work in roofing restoration, repairing hail damage, and it runs through the wines: 32 Degrees Sauvignon Blanc, Restoration Chardonnay, Weather Dancer rosé and a sparkling wine made to be poured over ice. Chad Alexander is the winemaker.

Rather than own land, Hailstone leases select rows in vineyards on Mount Veeder and in Calistoga, Coombsville, Yountville and Oakville, so the team can farm for quality block by block. The top wines are the Impact Cabernet from St. Helena and the Proprietor's Reserve Cabernet from Diamond Mountain. The labels carry a pewter-toned hailstone, and the wines have won medals at the TEXSOM International Wine Awards.

You taste Hailstone at Vintner's Collective on Main Street, in a building from 1875 that was once a saloon and a brothel. Pour at the bar, or book the seated reserve tasting upstairs for something quieter. It is an easy, central start before heading out to a Coombsville cave.

Tasting Fees

At Vintner's Collective: $50 for The No. 1, five wines at the bar, about 45 minutes, no reservation needed. $100 for The No. 2, a seated reserve tasting upstairs, by appointment (cheese and charcuterie $25 extra). $250 for The No. 3, with sparkling wine, cheese, charcuterie and chocolates, by appointment.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
