About the Winery

Dwight Bonewell and business partner Brad Ketz founded Grand Napa Vineyards in 2008, after years of hospitality work in Minnesota where Dwight helped guests find wines they loved. The next generation, Zach, now travels to pour the wines at tastings around the country.

Home is the Stone Crib estate in Rutherford, at the edge of the Rutherford Bench, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The land was once part of George Yount's Rancho Caymus grant. Its stone crib building, which replaced an earlier wooden farm building and reuses some of its wood, gives the estate wine its name and label. The company also buys from growers around the valley for wines such as a Howell Mountain Cabernet and a Los Carneros Chardonnay.

Grand Napa sells through its online shop, wine club and retail partners, and publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so the estate does not receive visitors. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do host.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Rancho Caymus Inn or Bardessono.

10:00 · Pickup at Rancho Caymus Inn or Bardessono

Since Grand Napa does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Rancho Caymus Inn, at the Rutherford crossroads, is about 15 minutes from the first stop above Yountville, and Bardessono, a spa hotel in the center of Yountville, is about 5 minutes away. The day fits about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Blankiet Estate

About 10 minutes away. A hillside estate above Yountville with a castle-style tasting room, deep caves and Bordeaux-style reds. The Classic Experience is $175 for five or more wines; we allow about 90 minutes. By appointment, Tuesday to Saturday.

12:00 · Lunch at Rutherford Grill

About 15 minutes away. A classic Rutherford grill on Highway 29, known for its rotisserie chicken and ribs. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:10 · Ghost Block Estate Wines

About 8 minutes away. A fifth-generation farming family's Cabernet label, poured at the historic Napa Wine Company in Oakville. The Taste of Oakville and Yountville AVA is $55, about 90 minutes, and the Pelissa Vineyard Tour by open-air golf cart is $95. By reservation at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

2:55 · Moone-Tsai Wines

About 15 minutes away. Howell Mountain, To Kalon and Pritchard Hill wines made by Philippe Melka, poured at the Brasswood estate north of St. Helena. The guided Wine Tasting is $125, about an hour. By appointment, daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., booked at least a week ahead.

3:55 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:15 p.m., a little over six hours after pickup.

About $355 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Blankiet hosts Tuesday to Saturday, and Ghost Block's tastings start at set times (we aim for 1 p.m.), so this is a Tuesday to Saturday plan. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
