Depiction

About the Winery

Depiction is owned and run by Sebastian and Estelle Lane, who describe it as a wine/art project. For each vintage they commission an original painting, then hand cut the canvas into as many pieces as there are bottles. Each piece becomes a front label, numbered on the back so its place in the painting can be found, and the presentation box shows a print of the whole work before it was cut.

The wine is made mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon grown in the St. Helena appellation, from vines planted in 2010 and farmed entirely by hand. The Lanes make it themselves at a small family-owned winery in St. Helena. The current 2019 was picked on October 1 and aged in 50% new French oak. Depiction is released in standard bottles first, then a year later in boxes of three 1.5-liter magnums.

There is no tasting room, and Depiction does not offer tastings or visits. The wine is sold through the order form on its website and at a few Napa Valley retailers, including Acme Fine Wines, Gary's and the Oakville Wine Merchant, and it appears on wine lists such as The French Laundry and Press. The day below stays close to St. Helena, with three estates that do host.

Tasting Fees

Depiction does not offer tastings. On the day below, fees run $75 at Corison, $95 at Crocker & Starr and $95 at Spring Mountain Vineyard, paid to each winery.

Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
