About the Winery

Carmen Policy played a key role in all five of the San Francisco 49ers' Super Bowl wins and later led the Cleveland Browns. He and his wife, Gail, looked at more than 15 Napa Valley properties before settling in Yountville in 2003 and planting a vineyard. The first vintage of Casa Piena was 2006. The name is Italian for "full house": three sons and two daughters, or three of a kind and a pair.

The 14-acre Policy Vineyard sits in the Yountville AVA, with views of the Mayacamas and Vaca mountains and the Stags Leap Palisades. Four Cabernet Sauvignon clones grow in blocks named for the Policy children, and Thomas Rivers Brown has made the wine since the start. In 2019 the Policys sold the estate to Mark Pulido and Donna Walker, under a long-term agreement that keeps Casa Piena estate grown.

Casa Piena has no tasting room, and the vineyard is now a private home. Visits are by private request through the winery, and we arrange it on your behalf; the place, time and any fee are confirmed by the winery. Production is small, so a tasting here is personal, and guests who fall for the wine can join Club Casa Piena for an annual allocation.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Bardessono or Hotel Villagio.

10:00 · Pickup at Bardessono or Hotel Villagio

Bardessono, a garden hotel, and Hotel Villagio are both in Yountville, a short drive from the Policy Vineyard's corner of the valley. Casa Piena sets the place and time of its tasting, so we may shift the order of the day around it. The day below runs about six and a quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Casa Piena

A private Casa Piena tasting, arranged on your behalf through the winery. We plan about an hour and a quarter; the place, format and any fee are confirmed by the winery.

11:45 · Keever Vineyards

About 15 minutes away. A small family estate in the western hills south of Yountville, with Cabernet made by Celia Welch. The private tasting and tour is $100, about 90 minutes. By appointment, booked by phone at least a day ahead, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

1:30 · Lunch at Mustards Grill

About 12 minutes away. Lunch at Mustards Grill on Highway 29 just north of Yountville, a Napa Valley favorite for more than 40 years, open daily for lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:50 · Handwritten Wines

About 8 minutes away. A tasting room in south Yountville that pours Cabernet Sauvignon from different Napa Valley AVAs side by side, a good way to see how Yountville fruit compares. The Classic Experience pours four Cabernets with truffle potato chips and crackers ($75, waived with a $100 purchase); we plan about an hour. By appointment only, daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

4:00 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:15 p.m., about six and a quarter hours after pickup.

About $175 per person in tasting fees for Keever and Handwritten, paid directly to each winery, plus Casa Piena's fee, confirmed with the appointment.

Keever books by phone at least a day ahead, and Casa Piena confirms its own time, so we set the final order once both are confirmed. The day runs about six and a quarter hours, back by about 4:15 p.m.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
