About the Winery

Rich and Carolyn Czapleski bought the property at the corner of Dunaweal Lane and the Silverado Trail in 1983 and founded Canard Vineyard in 1984. The Czapleski family still owns it, with a small team that includes their son Adam, managing director Adam Fox and winemaker Brian Graham. The 25-acre estate was once the homestead of Reason P. Tucker, who helped rescue survivors of the Donner Party, and his house dates to 1859.

The estate's Zinfandel vines were planted more than 140 years ago and still bear fruit. The grapes are dry farmed and sustainably grown, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Canard makes about nine single-vineyard wines a year in small lots. Rich Czapleski's rule for the place: "If you take care of the vines, the vines will take care of you."

Canard welcomes a limited number of guests four days a week, in what it calls a private tasting in the spirit of Napa Valley's earlier days. There is no tasting bar and no set script. The Estate Tasting is a seated pour of five estate wines, and the Reserve Tasting goes deeper into the most limited wines, including the Reserve Zinfandel.

Tasting Fees

Two private, seated tastings: The Estate Tasting, five estate wines from single-vineyard blocks, and The Reserve Tasting, featuring Canard's most limited wines. Current prices are shown when you reserve.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
