About the Winery

Frank Family Vineyards sits on Larkmead Lane, just south of Calistoga, on land that was once the country home of Lillie Hitchcock Coit, the San Francisco benefactor behind Coit Tower. She named the property Larkmead for the meadowlarks in its fields. The historic Larkmead winery dates to the 1880s and was refaced in 1906 with stone quarried from the nearby hills, its walls three feet thick.

From 1958 to 1992 the stone winery was home to Hanns Kornell, a pioneer of traditional-method sparkling wine in California. Rich Frank, a former president of Disney Studios, bought the property in the early 1990s and released his first 200 cases in 1993. Today Frank Family is one of Napa Valley's best-known family wineries.

The visit is relaxed and friendly. Tastings are poured in the original Craftsman house and in the Miller House, designed by Howard Backen, with wines that run from sparkling and Chardonnay to the estate's Winston Hill Cabernet Sauvignon. It is an easy, welcoming first stop for any group.

Tasting Fees

$60 for the estate tasting or the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir tasting. $100 for the Winston Hill library tasting or the Miller House experience, both paired with cheese and charcuterie.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
