Brilliant Mistake is the shared dream of founders and proprietors John and Stacy Reinert. The winery describes John's artistic background as the fuel for free-thinking risk-taking and Stacy's strength and judgment as the foundation under every risk, and its motto runs along the same lines: mistakes spark creativity. The winery names Maayan Koschitzky, whose experience includes Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle and Atelier Melka, as its winemaker.
The flagship is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards in Rutherford and Oakville. The G3 bottling comes only from old vines in a historic section of the Beckstoffer Georges III vineyard in Rutherford, and The Poet & The Muse is the reserve Cabernet. A Sauvignon Blanc rounds out the list. The aim, in the winery's words, is wine with nothing added and nothing interfered with, made from the fruit each vintage gives.
The wines are sold through the winery's mailing list and online purchase page, with release news by email; current releases are 2022 Cabernets and a 2023 Sauvignon Blanc. Brilliant Mistake publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do.
Brilliant Mistake does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
