Howell Mountain · Napa Valley
An organic Howell Mountain estate above the fog, planted in 2020 by a retired global consultant, with a dusty 'moondust' block behind its first estate Cabernets. Bartlett does not receive visitors; here is what to know, and a day at sought-after estates nearby that do host.

Ron Bartlett spent 23 years as a partner at one of the world's largest global consulting firms, so often on the road that his answer to 'Where are you today?' became 'an airport somewhere.' In 2017, with his daughter Elena off to college, he retired to pursue a dream of making wine, and a three-year search ended that year with the site that became the estate vineyard on Howell Mountain.
The vineyard sits above the fog at 1,500 to 1,600 feet in the Howell Mountain AVA and was planted in 2020. The flat South Block, nicknamed the moondust block by Ron for the volcanic ash that rises when you walk it, contrasts with the North Block, sloped up to 27 degrees on weathered rhyolite. It has been CCOF certified organic from day one; Jon Jones makes the wine and Paul Saviez manages the vines.
The wines are sold only by allocation to members of the mailing list, and new buyers join a waitlist. The release of the 2022 Howell Mountain Estate Cabernet realized Ron's dream, and a 2024 Napa Valley Bordeaux blend from another Howell Mountain vineyard was released in fall 2026. There is no tasting room or visit program, so the day below visits three estates nearby that do host.
Bartlett does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Bartlett Family Vineyards does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Robert Foley's tasting starts at 10:30 near the top of Howell Mountain, about 20 minutes from Meadowood and about 25 from Alila Napa Valley in St. Helena. The day runs about six and a quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 25 minutes up the mountain. Acclaimed winemaker Bob Foley's small family winery near the top of Howell Mountain, where more than 1,000 barrels rest in a cave completed in 2008 and the permit allows only 10 guests a day. The tasting is $50, about an hour, with one fee refunded for every six bottles. By appointment, usually Thursday to Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
About 15 minutes away. An organic and biodynamic family estate on Howell Mountain, where a family member or the winemaker walks you through the hillside vines and hand-dug caves before a side-by-side flight of estate Cabernets. About 90 minutes; the fee is confirmed when we book. By appointment, Monday to Saturday.
About 20 minutes down the mountain. Lunch at Forum, the main restaurant at Meadowood at the foot of Howell Mountain, with seasonal dishes drawn from the Meadowood farm. Lunch is served on weekdays, with brunch on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. A family winery devoted to Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc, with seated tastings on the front porch and in the wine garden of the Spring House in downtown St. Helena. The Trademark Tasting is $75, about an hour. By appointment, for up to 6 guests.
Back by about 4:10 p.m., about six and a quarter hours after pickup.
About $125 per person in tasting fees for Robert Foley and Lang & Reed, plus Neal Family's fee, which is confirmed when we book; each is paid directly to the winery.
Robert Foley usually hosts Thursday to Saturday at 10:30 a.m., and Neal Family is closed on Sundays, so this day fits a Thursday, Friday or Saturday. On Saturday, Forum serves brunch. The day runs about six and a quarter hours.
