Claus Janzen discovered fine wine during ski seasons in Switzerland, moved his family from Winnipeg to Napa and spent 12 years building Caymus's international marketing. In 1993 a chance purchase of nearly discarded Sangiovese became the first Bacio Divino, Italian for divine kiss. Claus and his wife Diane still run the family business, with their son Kyle as general manager.
Bacio Divino itself is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese. Its sister Pazzo, a Sangiovese-led blend, followed in 1999, then the single-varietal Janzen and Vagabond in 2004 and Lucie in 2009. The family's hillside land sits high above Dutch Henry Canyon east of the Silverado Trail, in the Calistoga AVA, and the winery has long bought fruit from famous Beckstoffer vineyards.
Bacio Divino has no tasting room and does not receive visitors. The wines are sold through its online store, wine club and mailing list, and through distributors. The estate's remote hillside vineyards are not part of a visit, so this day goes to mountain estates nearby that do host.
Bacio Divino does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Bacio Divino does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Harvest Inn, with gardens at the south end of St. Helena, and Alila Napa Valley, above the Beringer estate north of town, are both about 20 minutes from Howell Mountain. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 20 minutes away. Randy Dunn's family winery high on Howell Mountain, famous for long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon. The $125 visit walks the vineyards and caves and ends with a seated tasting of several vintages; we allow about 90 minutes. By appointment, Monday to Friday, requested more than three business days ahead; groups up to six.
About 10 minutes away. A small family winery near the top of Howell Mountain, where the tasting is poured in the vineyard under an old black walnut tree. The Private Wine Tasting with a vineyard and winery walk is $65, about 75 minutes (waived with a $150 purchase). By appointment only; closed Sundays.
About 20 minutes away. Lunch at Gott's Roadside, classic American fare at picnic tables on Main Street in St. Helena, open daily from 11 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 8 minutes away. A family winery founded in 1979 on the Silverado Trail north of St. Helena, with a hand-hewn stone winery; during your appointment your group is the only one on the property. Chateau Boswell does not publish a tasting fee; we confirm it when we book and allow about an hour. By appointment only.
Back by about 4:10 p.m., about six hours after pickup.
About $190 per person for Dunn and Red Thread, plus Chateau Boswell's fee, which is confirmed when we book. Fees are paid directly to each winery.
Dunn hosts Monday to Friday and Red Thread is closed Sundays, so plan this day on a weekday. The first stop starts at 10:30 a.m. because of the drive up Howell Mountain.
