Aonair, pronounced ay-oh-nair, is Gaelic for individual, a nod to the Irish roots of owners Grant and Megan Long and to the early years when Grant did everything himself, from the cellar to meeting every customer. He made his first barrel of wine at eighteen in his parents' garage, worked at Napa wineries through his twenties, and released the first Aonair vintage in 2008.
In 2015 Grant and Megan bought an estate in Conn Valley at the base of Howell Mountain, east of St. Helena, with rustic pines, rolling hills and the shimmer of Lake Hennessey. It became Aonair Winery & Caves. The wines are made in very small amounts and are not sold in shops or restaurants; they go only to allocation members and to guests who visit the estate.
A visit is a private tour and tasting, behind the scenes of the winemaking and grape growing, ending in the caves with the reserve wines. Tastings are privately hosted and book well in advance, so we request a time by email as soon as you book. Guests love the drive out past Lake Hennessey; it feels a long way from the valley floor.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. Aonair does not publish a tasting fee; it is confirmed when the private tasting is booked.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Meadowood or Hotel St. Helena.
Meadowood, at the foot of Howell Mountain, is about 10 minutes from the estate, and Hotel St. Helena on Main Street about 15. This day runs close to seven hours because the estate is out in the eastern hills; extra time is added by the hour.
A private tour and tasting that ends in the caves. No length or fee is published, so we allow about 75 minutes and confirm both when the visit is booked.
About 20 minutes away. A 1,000-acre Chiles Valley estate with a private lake and vines planted in 1974, reached by a scenic drive into the eastern hills. The Estate Tasting with cheese and charcuterie is $75, about 90 minutes, with 24 hours' notice. By prepaid appointment, daily 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
About 25 minutes away. Back toward the valley for lunch at Forum, the main restaurant at Meadowood, served Monday to Friday, with brunch on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About $150 per person in tasting fees for Maxville and 13th Vineyard, plus Aonair's fee, which is confirmed when the visit is booked. Fees are paid directly to each winery.
Aonair sits in the hills east of St. Helena and Maxville is a scenic drive farther out in Chiles Valley, so the day runs close to seven hours. 13th Vineyard is open Wednesday to Sunday, and Maxville's Estate Tasting needs 24 hours' notice.
