Jean Adolphe Brun and Jean Victor Chaix, two French immigrants, planted this site on Howell Mountain in 1877 and called it Nouveau Medoc Vineyard. They were among the first to plant vines at 1,600 to 1,800 feet. By 1886 they had built a three-story, gravity-fed stone winery, and wine from the estate won a bronze medal at the 1889 Paris World Competition.
The winery says it was the thirteenth bonded winery in California, which is where today's name comes from. In 1980 Francis and Françoise DeWavrin, descendants of the family behind Château La Mission Haut-Brion, renamed it Château Woltner. Pat and Anne Stotesbery took over in 2000, and in 2016 the PlumpJack Group bought the property and renamed it 13th Vineyard. Danielle Cyrot is the winemaker.
The standard tasting starts with a tour of the old stone winery, then a side-by-side tasting of five wines from across the PlumpJack Collection, from CADE Sauvignon Blanc to the limited-production 13th Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. There is also a library tasting, a picnic lunch on the estate, and bottle service on the patio overlooking the winery and vineyards.
$75 for the 13th Vineyard Tasting Experience, which begins with a tour of the 1886 stone winery. $125 for the Picnic Experience with lunch on the estate. $150 for Raid The Cellar, a library tasting with a winery tour, cheese and chocolates.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
