About the Winery

Chiles Valley is named for Col. Joseph Chiles, who first came to California in 1841 and was granted the rancho here in 1844. In 1949 Charles Simmons bought the property to start a summer camp for children, and the Keith family later ran it as the Bar 49 Recreation Ranch. The Keiths planted its first vineyards in 1974. The current owners bought the property in 2014 and named it Maxville.

The estate sits at about 1,000 feet in the Chiles Valley District, a small appellation in the hills east of the Napa Valley floor. It covers more than 1,000 acres, and 700 of them are permanently protected with the Napa Valley Land Trust as "forever wild." Along with the estate vineyard, whose oldest vines date from 1974, there is a private lake and barrel-aging caves.

After the purchase, landscape architect Topher Delaney designed the grounds, including the "Oculus of Light" sculpture at the entrance. Tastings last about 90 minutes, at indoor and outdoor tasting bars and on the terrace, with estate Cabernet Sauvignon at the center of the lineup.

Tasting Fees

$49 for the Liquid Luxury tasting of five wines. $75 for the Estate Tasting with cheese and charcuterie, or for the Chocolate and Wine Pairing. $110 for the Grand Reserve Tasting with cheese and charcuterie. Each runs about 90 minutes.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
