Howell Mountain · Napa Valley
A rustic family estate at almost 1,800 feet on the far edge of Howell Mountain, with unadorned caves and fog rising from the valley below, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Almacerro sits on land with deep Howell Mountain roots. Frederick Hess founded La Jota Vineyard Company on Howell Mountain in 1898, and in the 1970s Bill Smith revived La Jota and helped establish the Howell Mountain AVA. In 1986 Smith bought the neighboring parcel that is now Almacerro, and he and his wife Joan made wine there until 2016, when they sold it to Frank Scherkenbach and told him to take it to the next level.
The estate sits at almost 1,800 feet, at what the winery calls the land's end of Howell Mountain, ringed by pine and oak forest. Morning fog from the valley funnels up two gullies beside the winery toward the vines. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, with small parcels of Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Consulting winemaker Françoise Peschon and Matilda Scott make the wines.
The crushpad is rustic and the caves unadorned, and the family likes it that way, alongside 120-year-old olive trees, sweeping valley views and glimpses of the Mayacamas and San Pablo Bay. There is no public tasting program. The winery welcomes requests to share its wines in person in Napa and offers to help plan a visit, so we ask on your behalf and confirm where and when.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. Almacerro does not publish a tasting program or fee.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
