Silverado Trail · Napa Valley
A mathematician's small Cabernet vineyard on the Silverado Bench, first made by Dave Phinney and farmed by Steve Matthiasson and John Truchard. Aftermath does not receive visitors; here is what to know, and a day at sought-after estates nearby that do host.

Aftermath belongs to Jim and Ellen Kaplan, who met in high school. Jim was a mathematics professor at Northwestern and Boston University before founding an investment advisory firm, and the name is a tribute to his first career: literally, a new career after math. His interest in wine began at free Friday tastings in a shop near his office.
The Kaplan Vineyard sits on the Silverado Bench about 200 feet above the valley floor, just south and east of the Oak Knoll District, with just over 15 acres and eight planted to Cabernet Sauvignon plus a third of an acre of Petit Verdot. Dave Phinney made the wine from 2011 to 2016, and Kevin Fox has made it since 2017. Steve Matthiasson consults on the farming, and John Truchard manages the vines.
The wines, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Malbec, are sold through the winery's online shop. Aftermath lists a physical address on the Silverado Trail but no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do host, in the hills and caves east of Napa.
Aftermath does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Aftermath does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Silverado Resort, at the foot of Atlas Peak, and Milliken Creek Inn, on the river north of downtown Napa, are each about 12 minutes from the first stop. The day runs about six and a quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 12 minutes away. Hand-farmed Rutherford Bench Cabernet from a family in the valley's wine business for more than a century, poured after a winery tour in the hillside caves at Soda Canyon. The Current Release Tasting with a cheese board is $95, about 90 minutes. By appointment; days are confirmed with the request.
About 12 minutes away. A small family winery at the base of Mt. George, built by hand by its owners, who host every visit themselves on the terrace, in the winery and in the caves. The hosted experience is $80; visits run up to two hours, and we plan 90 minutes. By appointment only.
About 12 minutes away. Lunch at Kitchen Door in downtown Napa, a sit-down restaurant on First Street. Lunch runs from 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and from 12:30 p.m. on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. Napa native Mark Jessup, who worked on the early Opus One wines at Robert Mondavi, pours his small-lot Cabernet in a private, sit-down tasting in a small wine lounge in the Oak Knoll District. $75; we allow about an hour. By appointment, daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Back by about 4:15 p.m., about six and a quarter hours after pickup.
About $250 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
S.R. Tonella does not publish its days and confirms the time with the request. Lunch is a late one at 1:40, and the day is back by about 4:15 p.m.
