About the Winery

SUTRO Wine Co. was founded in 2012 by Alice Warnecke Sutro, an artist, grape grower and winemaker who is the first in her family to make wine after three generations of farming. She manages all of the business and works alongside her aunt, Margo Warnecke Merck, who manages the family vineyard. Lisa Bishop Forbes, formerly Director of Winemaking at Chalk Hill Estate, has been consulting winemaker since 2020.

The grapes come only from Warnecke Ranch & Vineyard, a 260-acre family ranch along the Russian River at the southern end of Alexander Valley, where architect John Carl Warnecke established the vineyard in 1973. SUTRO makes about 1,200 cases a year of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc, with minimal intervention and restrained new oak to let the volcanic soils show.

SUTRO used to offer a Hike & Taste at the ranch, but its website now says tours and tastings are no longer offered. The wines are sold through its online shop, club and mailing list. The day below stays on Chalk Hill Road and in Alexander Valley, ending at Medlock Ames, whose Bell Mountain winery across the road is where SUTRO is made.

Tasting Fees

SUTRO no longer offers tastings. On the day below, expect about $155 per person: $60 at Lancaster, $50 at Chalk Hill Estate and $45 at Medlock Ames.

Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
