Founder and winemaker TJ Elam and his wife, Francesca, launched Stonemason Cellars in 2019 to make a wine with "as much character as the people who make it." The name goes back five generations, to Batista Maggetti, who left Ticino, Switzerland, for Northern California in 1860, opened a hotel in St. Helena and used his stonemason's skills to help build the Greystone winery, now the Culinary Institute of America. TJ grew up visiting family in Napa Valley, studied business at Sonoma State, caught the wine bug selling wine in a Russian River Valley tasting room, worked harvests at home and in Australia's Barossa Valley and went back to Sonoma State for an MBA in wine business.
Winemaker and vineyard manager Maxime "Max" Gautier, from Brittany, started in wine sales in England, worked his first harvest in the Rhône Valley at Maison Jaboulet Aîné in 2017 and met TJ at Bethany Wines in the Barossa. Together they make small-lot wines from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Valley and beyond, topped by the Harmon Family Reserve wines; the 2022 Harmon Family Reserve Chardonnay from Mendocino County won Best of Class at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and 92 points from Wine Enthusiast.
The tasting room is in the heart of Santa Rosa's historic Railroad Square, near restaurants, hotels and the SMART train, and it is modern and relaxed. Tastings are seated and guided, with small bites chosen to show how simple food can bring out a wine, and the Reserve Flight pours the best barrels. Because it stays open into the evening, it also makes an easy last stop before dinner downtown.
$25 for Nibbles & Wine, three wines with small bites (about 1 hour; one fee waived per bottle bought from the tasting), and $65 for the Reserve Flight of four Harmon Family Reserve wines (1 to 1.5 hours; one fee waived with three Reserve bottles).
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Stonemason opens at 11 Sunday to Thursday and Littorai hosts Monday to Saturday, so this day works Monday to Thursday; on Friday or Saturday Stonemason opens at noon, and we make it the last stop instead.
About $200 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
