About the Winery

Square Peg is a boutique, family-owned and family-run winery on Stoetz Lane, in the hills between Sebastopol and Occidental. Its estate vineyard sits where three appellations overlap, the Russian River Valley, Green Valley of Russian River Valley and the Sonoma Coast, and the wines are made by William Knuttel, a longtime California winemaker who has spent most of his career on ultra-premium wine.

The vineyard was planted in 1999 on a ridge at about 800 feet, first to Bradford Mountain Zinfandel; in 2011 half of it was budded over to the 828 and Calera clones of Pinot Noir. The vines are dry-farmed, with no irrigation at all, which the Gold Ridge soil makes possible: sandy loam on top for drainage, mineral-rich clay below that holds the winter rain, and roots that reach as deep as 30 feet. Each vine is tended by hand. Alongside the estate wines are a Riddle Vineyard Pinot Noir and an old-vine Biglieri Zinfandel and a Meritage from Dry Creek Valley.

The wines are made in small lots and sold only at the estate tasting room, which makes the visit the point. Tastings are private and seated, a flight of six estate wines, and for anyone curious about how dry farming works, the tasting can include a guided walk through the vines with sun on the ridge and the coastal fog not far off.
