Giuseppe and Pietro Simi, brothers from Italy who came to California during the Gold Rush, founded Simi in San Francisco in 1876 and moved it to Healdsburg in 1881. Giuseppe's daughter, Isabelle Simi, took over in 1904 and kept the winery going through Prohibition, storing wine in its stone cellars, then sold it to grower Russell Green in 1970 while staying on. Moët-Hennessy bought Simi in 1981, and Constellation Brands in 1999.
Simi was a training ground for some of California's most important winemakers. Mary Ann Graf, the first woman to graduate from an American university with a degree in enology, joined in 1973, and Zelma Long took over the winemaking in 1979 and later became president and CEO. Its wines come largely from its own vineyards: about 600 acres in Alexander Valley planted to Bordeaux varieties, and the 120-acre Goldfields Vineyard in the Russian River Valley for Chardonnay.
Simi wines are sold through retailers, but the winery itself no longer hosts guests: the owners ended hospitality at the Healdsburg Avenue winery in early 2023, closing the tasting room and wine club while winemaking continued on site. In 2025 Constellation agreed to sell Simi, with other brands, to The Wine Group. For a day of tasting in the same corner of Sonoma County, we take guests to small estates nearby that do open their doors.
Simi Winery does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 9:55 a.m. from a Healdsburg hotel such as Hotel Healdsburg or h2hotel.
Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, and h2hotel, just off the Healdsburg plaza, are each about 5 minutes from Ramey Wine Cellars. Since Simi Winery does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 5 minutes away. David Ramey, who worked at Château Pétrus, Chalk Hill, Matanzas Creek, Dominus and Rudd, founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996, and his Chardonnays earned him the nickname Professor Chardonnay; his children Claire and Alan have run it since 2021. The seated tasting of six wines, in a private upstairs parlor overlooking the cellar a few blocks from the plaza, is $50 and about 90 minutes. By appointment, daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
About 25 minutes away. Fahri and Constance Diner's 200-acre estate, hidden in a horseshoe-shaped bowl in the mountains above Alexander Valley, with Philippe Melka consulting on the wines since 2006. The Stepping Stone Tasting of current releases is $95, 45 to 60 minutes at a communal table in the tasting salon overlooking the valley; the private Foundation Tasting of allocated wines is $150. By appointment, daily.
About 10 minutes away. Chef Dino Bugica's restaurant in a historic building on Geyserville Avenue, with Neapolitan-style pizza from a wood-burning oven, handmade pasta and house-cured salumi. Lunch is served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 15 minutes away. The Hawkes family has grown Cabernet Sauvignon in Alexander Valley since 1972, and the tasting room patio is shaded by wisteria. The 90-minute Private Reserve Tasting of six Cabernets, from barrel samples to library wines, with seasonal bites, is $70, by reservation at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.
Back in Healdsburg by 4:20 p.m.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Hawkes pours its Private Reserve Tasting at 2:30 and it runs 90 minutes, so this day ends around 4:20; extra time can be added by the hour.
About $215 to $270 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
