About the Winery

David and Carla Ramey founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. David had been making wine since the 1970s, learning from mentors including Zelma Long at Simi and Jean-Claude Berrouet in Bordeaux, and he helped bring techniques such as whole-cluster pressing of white grapes, aging white wines on their lees in barrel and native yeast fermentation into California winemaking. Wine Spectator called him "Professor Chardonnay." In 2021 the second generation, Claire and Alan Ramey, became co-presidents.

Ramey is best known for Chardonnay, and it makes single-vineyard wines and blends across Sonoma and Napa with multigenerational winegrowing families, along with wines from the family's own estate vineyard, Westside Farms. Cameron Frey, President of Winemaking, has been with the winery for more than 20 years, with Lydia Cummins as VP of Winemaking.

The winery sits by Memorial Bridge at the south edge of downtown Healdsburg, and the visit is private: your group sits in an upstairs parlor that looks down over the working cellar, and the standard tasting runs through six wines in about 90 minutes. Tell us ahead of time if there is a wine you hope to taste, and Ramey will try to pour it. With only two seatings a day, this is one to book early.

Tasting Fees

$50 per person for the private seated tasting of six wines, about 90 minutes. Tasting fees are separate from wine purchases, and tastings cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice are not refunded.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 9:55 a.m. from a Healdsburg hotel such as Hotel Healdsburg or Harmon Guest House.

9:55 · Pickup at Hotel Healdsburg or Harmon Guest House

Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, and Harmon Guest House, a boutique hotel just off the plaza, are each about 5 minutes from Ramey, just across the south edge of downtown by Memorial Bridge. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Ramey Wine Cellars

The private seated tasting of six wines in the upstairs parlor over the cellar, about 90 minutes ($50).

11:45 · Mazzocco Sonoma

About 15 minutes away. Founded in 1984 and run since 2005 by Ken and Diane Wilson, with single-vineyard Zinfandels from valley floor to mountain blocks at up to 2,400 feet. Each party gets its own outdoor table in the garden with tableside service; the Garden Tasting of five wines is $25, about 75 minutes, for up to 6. By reservation, daily from 11 a.m., last seating 3:45 p.m.

1:05 · Lunch at Dry Creek General Store

About 5 minutes away. A country store since 1881 at the crossroads of Dry Creek Valley, with a deli for sandwiches, soups and salads, a front porch over the valley and a garden out back. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:15 · A. Rafanelli

About 5 minutes away. One of Dry Creek Valley's most sought-after Zinfandel houses: the Rafanelli family has grown grapes and made wine here since the early 1900s, now in its fourth generation, and sells mostly to its A. List, which keeps a waiting list. A casual, personal tasting is $25, for parties of 6 or fewer. By appointment only; days and hours change with the seasons.

3:15 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 3:35 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Ramey seats guests only at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., so we build the day around the morning seating. A. Rafanelli sets its hours by season, so we confirm the afternoon appointment when we book.

About $100 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
