About the Winery

Ray Duncan, a Colorado entrepreneur, and winemaker Justin Meyer founded Silver Oak in 1972 with a handshake and a plan to make one wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, in an old dairy barn in Oakville. Meyer retired and sold his share to the Duncan family in 2001, and Ray's sons David and Tim Duncan own and run the winery today.

Every Silver Oak Cabernet is aged only in American oak, and the winery owns its own cooperage in Missouri to make its barrels. It farms more than 400 acres of vines in Napa Valley and Alexander Valley, with a Cabernet from each valley. Laura Oskwarek oversees all winemaking.

The Alexander Valley winery opened in 2017 and became the world's first winery to earn LEED Platinum for building design and construction, built with a goal of net-zero water and energy. Tastings pour both Cabernets, and the Silver Tour walks through the vineyard to the production facility. The original winery is in Oakville; see our Silver Oak Oakville page.
