About the Winery

Glenn and Melissa Alexander grew up in rural East Texas, met in college in 1974 and spent twenty years in business before turning to food and wine. Visitors to Sonoma County since 1985, in 2001 they bought a farmhouse with a nine-acre old-vine Zinfandel vineyard in the Russian River Valley, the Home Ranch, and started a new life. Their children, Chelsea and Dustin, are partners in the winery.

Glenn went back to farming: he studied viticulture, worked in the cellar at Preston in Dry Creek Valley and farmed vineyards for neighbors and for wineries such as Paul Hobbs, Pahlmeyer and Lynmar, growing grapes for Far Niente, Williams Selyem and Failla. He studied winemaking at UC Davis and in summer classes at the University of Bordeaux, worked with Denis Malbec, the former winemaker at Château Latour, and helped Gonzague and Clare Lurton of Château Durfort-Vivens start their Sonoma County winery. He now focuses only on Sanglier, making small lots inspired by Melissa's cooking.

Melissa filled the farmhouse gardens with more than thirty fruit trees, heirloom vegetables and herbs grown from seeds collected in Provence and Gascony, and she is an inductee of the San Francisco chapter of Les Dames d'Escoffier. The wines are sold mainly through the Hogs & Frogs Wine Club, and a visit is a private tasting arranged ahead, not a walk-in tasting room, so it suits guests who want to meet the people behind a very small label.
