About the Winery

Michele Saini came to California from Genova, Italy, in 1908. In 1917 he and his brother-in-law, John Cuneo, bought a ranch in Dry Creek Valley as partners in Cuneo & Saini, growing pears, apples, prunes and wine grapes, and in 1934 they added a second ranch in Alexander Valley. The second generation, Eugene "Si" Saini and Eugene "Gene" Cuneo, joined the partnership, and in 1985 the third generation, John Saini, took over and formed Saini Farms.

For most of a century the family were growers, known in Dry Creek and Alexander valleys for careful farming. John's son Mike Saini, the fourth generation, wanted to make wine under the family's own name, and Saini Vineyards launched in 2008. The fifth generation is now learning the trade.

A visit here is relaxed and outdoors. Wines are poured by the flight, the glass or the bottle, and guests settle in at picnic tables under umbrellas with views across the vines, with cornhole on the lawn. It is a good stop for a group that wants to slow down for an hour on the valley floor, a few minutes from the Dry Creek General Store.

Tasting Fees

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:50 a.m. from a Healdsburg hotel such as Hotel Healdsburg or The Madrona.

10:50 · Pickup at Hotel Healdsburg or The Madrona

Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, and The Madrona, a 24-room hotel on a historic estate on Westside Road, are each about 5 minutes from Mill Creek, our first stop; Saini opens at noon, so it comes second. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

11:00 · Mill Creek Vineyards & Winery

About 5 minutes away. The Kreck family planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon in what is now the Dry Creek Valley appellation in 1964, and in 1982 two Kreck brothers milled trees from the property and built the tasting room themselves, with a waterwheel beside it. The seated Signature Flight of five wines by the waterwheel is $30 and the Reserve Flight $40. Daily, seatings 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., parties of 6 or fewer; reservations recommended.

12:30 · Saini Vineyards

About 15 minutes away. A flight of Saini wines at the picnic tables among the vines, about an hour; we confirm the fee when we book.

1:45 · Lunch at Diavola

About 15 minutes away. Chef Dino Bugica's restaurant in a historic building on Geyserville Avenue, with Neapolitan-style pizza from a wood-burning oven, handmade pasta and house-cured salumi; the menu changes every day. Lunch is served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

3:05 · Zichichi Family Vineyard

About 15 minutes away. A family estate on West Dry Creek Road with head-pruned Zinfandel and Petite Sirah vines planted in 1920. A host leads a behind-the-scenes walk through the winery, past the barrels and the harvest equipment, then pours four estate wines of your choosing in the rustic tasting room. The winery does not publish its tasting fee. By appointment, daily 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

4:05 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 4:30 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Saini opens at noon Thursday to Sunday, so this day starts with Mill Creek, puts Saini second and works Thursday to Sunday. It ends around 4:30.

About $30 to $40 per person at Mill Creek, paid directly to the winery; tasting fees at Saini and Zichichi are to be verified upon reservation.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
