Winemaker Laurence Donald put the Parum Leo label on his first barrel of Pinot Noir in 2015. Before that he worked back-to-back harvests in California, New Zealand and Australia, at wineries including Merry Edwards, Felton Road and Leeuwin Estate, and later at Gary Farrell under Theresa Heredia. At the end of 2019 he took over the former Kastania winery south of Petaluma from Hoot and Linda Smith, and he reopened its tasting room in July 2021 after a year and a half of renovations.
The name is Latin for "little lion," a nod to Pinot Noir. The certified sustainable estate vineyard sits at the southern tip of the Petaluma Gap, planted to Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and farmed without pesticides or herbicides. Parum Leo also buys fruit from the Sebastopol Hills and the Russian River Valley. The grapes are fermented with native yeast, aged about a year and a half in French oak and bottled unfiltered.
Tastings are by appointment in a renovated historic barn and on its patio, with a plate of appetizers alongside the flight. The winery calls itself the closest winery to San Francisco, and it makes Pinot Noir above all, with a few white and red wines besides.
$30 for the PL Signature Tasting, five red and white wines with an appetizer plate. $40 for the PL Premiere Tasting, five small-lot reds with an appetizer plate. A picnic reservation for up to 2 hours among the vines is also offered.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
