Bernie Orsi, a first-generation Italian-American from San Pedro, spent his career in public service in San Francisco and then as a top executive in the beer industry. In 1990 he and his wife, Sandra, bought an old cattle ranch on Mill Creek Road that people said could not grow grapes. After a family trip to Italy, Bernie began planting Italian varieties, and in 2012 the family launched Orsi Family Vineyards.
The focus is lesser-known Italian grapes that suit Sonoma's Mediterranean climate: Biancolella from Ischia, the island where Bernie's mother was born, along with Negroamaro, Montepulciano, Sagrantino, Schioppettino, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. The fruit comes from ten properties in Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Winemaker Bill Guadagni, a fourth-generation Dry Creek Valley farmer whose family has worked the land here since 1898, joined in 2023, and Bernie's son Mark runs the winery.
The tasting room feels like a small corner of Italy, with cypress trees, olive groves and 70 acres of vineyard around it, yet it sits just two minutes from downtown Healdsburg. Guests come for the flights of unusual Italian varieties and the winery's Italian picnics, and the family is warm and welcoming.
$35 per person for the Solo Vino tasting, wine only, for 1 to 8 guests.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
