John and Dana Hawley came to Dry Creek Valley in 1975, and John built their house on weekends above a run-down vineyard. A UC Davis graduate, he was winemaker at Clos du Bois for ten years and head winemaker at Kendall-Jackson from 1990 to 1996, when the estate's Merlot formed the core of Kendall-Jackson's reserve program. The first vintage under the Hawley label was 1995, and their sons Paul and Austin joined full-time in 2005; Austin took over the winemaking in 2015.
The estate sits on the eastern slopes of Bradford Mountain, more than 1,000 feet up and above the morning fog, with ten acres of rocky hillside planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Viognier. The vineyard has been certified organic since 2006. The family makes about 20 wines, more than half of them in lots of under 500 cases, about 3,500 cases in all.
The experience here is the falconry. John, a licensed falconer since his teens, flies falcons over the vines to keep starlings off the grapes, and in the Falconry Experience he talks guests through the art of falconry before a tour of the vineyard and garden and a focused tasting. The regular vineyard tour also goes behind the scenes in the working winery, and from the top rows you can see from one end of the valley to the other.
$35 for the Vineyard Tour with a tasting of current releases. $60 for the Vineyard Tour with a picnic lunch. $85 for the Falconry Experience with John Hawley, with a vineyard tour and tasting.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
