About the Winery

The Munselle family has farmed in Alexander Valley since 1876. One ancestor, Shadrach Osborn, was proprietor of Lone Pine Cellars, the valley's first winery, and another, Broder Frellson, managed and made the wine at the second, simply called Red Winery. Later generations turned to farming instead; grandparents Fred and Ruby Wasson grew prunes, watermelons, tomatoes for the war effort, dairy cattle and alfalfa before converting the farm fully to grapes in 1972.

In 2006 Bret and Kristen Munselle, with Bret's parents, Bill and Reta, brought the family back to winemaking with Wasson Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon and Coin Flip Ranch Chardonnay, and the label now makes up to 1,000 cases a year, adding Osborn Ranch Zinfandel, River Ranch Sauvignon Blanc and a Rosé of Zinfandel. The family farms eight vineyard properties across Alexander Valley and one in Dry Creek Valley and manages vineyards for other growers; Bret, a UC Davis graduate, is active on the Sonoma County Winegrape Commission.

There is no tasting bar here. This is a working farm, and the visit is a vineyard tour with the family, arranged ahead, among ranches that carry the names of the people who first farmed them. For guests who want to understand how grapes are grown in Alexander Valley, from the people who grow a good share of them, it is a rare opportunity.
