About the Winery

Owner and winemaker Kevin Bersofsky designed roller coasters as an engineering undergraduate. He began making wine in his garage in Napa in 2006, and the corkscrews and inversions of his first full barrel of Syrah in 2008 gave the label its name: montagne russe is French for roller coaster. Montagne Russe became a licensed winery in 2015.

The winery makes single-vineyard Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah from cool-climate regions, working with under-the-radar vineyards chosen for their geology, in the Petaluma Gap and Sonoma Coast, Mendocino and the Santa Lucia Highlands.

The tasting room on Petaluma Boulevard doubles as a record store, with more than 4,000 vinyl records for sale and something always spinning. Tastings are five pours, and on weekends Winemaker for a Day takes small groups through four single-vineyard Pinot Noirs with Kevin, ending with each guest blending and bottling a wine to take home.

Tasting Fees

$35 for a tasting of five pours, with one fee waived per purchase of 3 or more bottles. $100 per person for Winemaker for a Day, a tasting of four single-vineyard Pinot Noirs and a blending session, with one finished bottle per person to take home.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

10:00 · Pickup at Hotel Petaluma or Sheraton Sonoma Wine Country Petaluma

Hotel Petaluma, a restored 1923 hotel downtown, is about 40 minutes from Gloria Ferrer, and the Sheraton Sonoma Wine Country Petaluma, overlooking the Petaluma River marina, about 35. Montagne Russe opens at noon and stays open into the evening, so the day heads to Carneros and Sonoma first and finishes downtown. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:40 · Gloria Ferrer

About 40 minutes away. The first sparkling wine house in Carneros, opened in 1986 by the Ferrer family of Freixenet, with a red-tiled winery modeled on the family's Catalan farmhouse and a terrace over the vines. The seated Taste of Carneros flight of four estate wines is $62, about an hour. Reservations required for tastings; closed Tuesday, last booking 3:30 p.m.

12:05 · Bedrock Wine Co.

About 25 minutes away. Morgan Twain-Peterson's acclaimed old-vine winery, founded in 2007, pouring in General Joseph Hooker's 1850s house off the Sonoma Plaza. The Bedrock Heritage Tasting is $45, waived with a three-bottle purchase per taster. By appointment only, daily, with the last appointment at 3:30 p.m.

1:10 · Lunch at the girl & the fig

About 5 minutes away. French country cooking on the Sonoma Plaza, with a Rhône-focused wine list, cheese and charcuterie, and a garden patio. Open from 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:50 · Montagne Russe

About 40 minutes away. A tasting of five pours ($35) among the record shelves, or, Friday to Sunday, book Winemaker for a Day ($100) and add time to the tour.

3:50 · Back to your hotel

Back in Petaluma by 3:55 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Gloria Ferrer and Montagne Russe are both closed Tuesday, so this day works any other day of the week.

About $140 to $210 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
