Peter Mathis was making furniture in western Massachusetts when he fell hard for wine. In 1990 he packed an old school bus and headed west to Ravenswood Winery, where he worked for more than 20 years, first in winemaking and later as general manager. The wines of the south of France were his first love, and capturing their joyful, Grenache-based style in California became his mission.
In 1997 he bought a hillside parcel above the town of Sonoma, cleared it himself and planted it mostly to Grenache, with Carignane, Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. He made his first Grenache in 2004, and his motto is simple: "I grow it. I make it." The Grenache won a gold medal at Grenache du Monde, the highest awarded to an American wine among 800 entries, and 96 points and double gold at the Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge; his Rosé de Grenache scored 98 points and Best in Class at the 2024 Experience Rosé competition. Überblend blends all four varieties from the same vineyard.
Mathis is a small, hands-on project sold through the winery's online shop and mailing list, with no tasting room or published visiting program. Current releases include the Sonoma Valley Grenache, Petite Sirah, Überblend and Rosé de Grenache. For a day of Grenache and other small-lot wines in the same corner of Sonoma, we take guests to estates nearby that do host.
Mathis Wine does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a Sonoma hotel such as Ledson Hotel or MacArthur Place.
Ledson Hotel, on the east side of the Sonoma Plaza, and MacArthur Place, a few blocks south of the plaza, are each about 5 minutes from Auteur's bungalow. Since Mathis Wine does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 5 minutes away. Kenneth and Laura Juhasz's Pinot Noir and Chardonnay house, with Anderson Valley wines that The Jeb Dunnuck Report has rated 97 points, pouring in its original 1915 bungalow a block off the Sonoma Plaza, inside or on the shady back patio. Two seated tastings, single-vineyard or appellation flights, are prepaid when booked; the fee is confirmed when we reserve. Open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
About 20 minutes away. Winemaker Katy Wilson's family label, about 500 cases a year of small-lot Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, poured at the family's farmhouse on Bonneau Road. The private, seated Collectors' Experience of six wines is $65, waived with a four-bottle purchase; plan on an hour to an hour and a half. Daily, by appointment only.
About 5 minutes away. A deli on the Carneros Highway, the Sonoma outpost of Angelo's smokehouse in Petaluma, with made-to-order sandwiches, jerky and picnic-ready snacks. Open from 9:30 a.m.; closed Tuesday. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. Founded in 1999 by Pedro and Amelia Ceja with Armando and Martha Ceja, a family that began as vineyard workers in Napa Valley and pooled their savings to buy 15 acres in Carneros in 1983. The Ceja Wine Tasting Experience of at least five wines is $40, one hour. Friday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., last seating 2:30; reservations required.
Back in Sonoma by 3:10 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Ceja opens Friday to Sunday, with its last seating at 2:30, so this day works Friday to Sunday.
About $105 per person in tasting fees for LaRue and Ceja, paid directly to each winery; Auteur's fee is to be verified upon reservation.
