Lou Preston, who learned grape growing and winemaking at UC Davis in the early 1970s, bought the Hartsock Ranch, then prunes and pears with a few acres of grapes, in 1973. He and his wife, Susan, planted their first vines in 1974, starting with Sauvignon Blanc, inspired by their friend Dave Stare of Dry Creek Vineyard, and set up their first winery in 1975 in the ranch's old prune dehydrator. The family has farmed the 125 acres ever since.
The land came with 100-year-old blocks of Zinfandel and Carignane, and the Prestons added Rhône and Italian varieties, 13 in all. The farm was first certified organic by CCOF in 2002, and some vineyard blocks have since given way to vegetables, fruit and olive trees, grain, sheep and chickens. Wines are made with native yeasts and little sulfur, and Grayson Hartley became winemaker in 2018.
Preston is best known for its Rhône-style blends, the L. Preston red and Madam Preston white, along with Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc. Tastings are private and relaxed, often outdoors under the trees, and the farm store sells estate olive oil, sourdough, pickles and seasonal produce.
$35 per person, non-refundable, for a private tasting of 5 to 6 organically grown estate wines, 60 to 75 minutes.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
