About the Winery
Donald Patz spent 29 vintages with his previous company, the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir house Patz & Hall, before moving on in May 2017. He did not take time off. As he puts it, he still had things he wanted to do in the wine business, and on May 1 he started a new brand built only on the Russian River Valley, where three decades of work with growers had made him friends. He called Steve and Joe at Dutton Ranch and Charlie Chenoweth, among others, to see what fruit was available, and the first vintage was 2017.
The name is made up: Sonoma means oceans and mountains to Patz, so MARItime plus monTANA became Maritana. Only Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are made. La Rivière Chardonnay and Le Russe Pinot Noir are blends of several vineyards, and single-vineyard wines, such as Dutton Ranch's Shop Block 1967 and Hansen Hill Chardonnays, the Jenkins Ranch and Martaella Pinot Noirs and Regina's Vineyard, go first to members. The style aims at perfume in the Pinot Noir and freshness in the Chardonnay, with mostly once-used barrels rather than heavy new oak. Critics have taken note: the 2022 Regina's Vineyard Pinot Noir earned 97 points from James Suckling, and several Chardonnays 94 to 96 points.
Maritana has no tasting room of its own. It is a member winery of Grand Cru Custom Crush in Windsor, a winery collective opened in 2017 that is home to more than 20 small, family-owned labels, and tastings are held in its private, open-air tasting salons. It is a quiet, sit-down way to taste wines that are hard to find in stores, and the collective's bottle shop sells them on the spot.

About 20 minutes away. A family-owned boutique winery atop a vineyard-covered hill on Limerick Lane, pouring small-lot wines from its 10-acre estate that are sold only at the winery and through its club. The Reserve and Library Tasting is $40 and the Daily Tasting $20, each about an hour; a seasonal Vineyard Walk Tasting goes out at 11:30 a.m. ($30, 75 minutes). Open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations recommended.

About 10 minutes away. There has been a bakery on this stretch of Healdsburg Avenue since 1923, and the Seppi family has run it as Costeaux since 1981. The café serves hearty seasonal dishes indoors or on the patio. Open daily from 7:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About 30 minutes away. The Gamba family has farmed this Woolsey Road vineyard since 1947; it was planted in 1900, is organically farmed and gets no water but the rain, and the family launched its own label in 2000, best known for old-vine Zinfandel. Every appointment is privately hosted, with a selection of Gamba and Etrusca wines; the fee is confirmed when we book. By appointment only.
