About the Winery

Christine and Tony Lombardi founded Lombardi Wines in 2013 as a passion project that honors a family history of wine, food and tradition. The Lombardi family has been in the Petaluma Gap since 1947.

Winemaker Cabell Coursey makes small lots of cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with the family, from Sonoma County vineyards such as Baer Vineyard in the Russian River Valley and Gap's Crown Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap. There are two tiers, Sonoma Coast appellation wines and single-vineyard designates, and the 2023 releases drew scores of 90 to 96 points from critics including Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, James Suckling and Jeb Dunnuck.

Lombardi has no tasting room and publishes no visiting program. The wines go to the mailing list as a personal allocation twice a year, each window open three to four weeks: the Sonoma Coast appellation wines in spring and the single-vineyard wines in fall. Members who order consistently are offered more wine and a wider selection over time. For a day out, we take guests to small Petaluma Gap estates that do open their doors.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a Petaluma hotel such as Hotel Petaluma or the Sheraton Sonoma Wine Country Petaluma.

10:00 · Pickup at Hotel Petaluma or Sheraton Sonoma Wine Country Petaluma

Hotel Petaluma, a restored 1923 hotel downtown, is about 10 minutes from Azari Vineyards, the first stop, and the Sheraton Sonoma Wine Country Petaluma, overlooking the Petaluma River marina, about 15. Since Lombardi Wines does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after Petaluma Gap estates that do. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Azari Vineyards

About 10 minutes away. Kamal and Parichehr Azari's estate in the hills west of Petaluma, laid out like a Tuscan villa with panoramic views and large succulents across the grounds; the family makes small lots of Pinot Noir and a cool-climate Shiraz. Visits are personal and by appointment, arranged in advance by phone or email; the fee is confirmed when we book.

11:35 · Parum Leo Winery

About 20 minutes away. Laurence Donald, who worked harvests at Merry Edwards, Felton Road and Gary Farrell, makes native-yeast Pinot Noir at the former Kastania winery at the southern tip of the Petaluma Gap; tastings are in a renovated historic barn and on its patio, with a plate of appetizers. The PL Signature Tasting is $30 and the PL Premiere Tasting of five small-lot reds $40. By appointment, Friday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

12:45 · Lunch at Della Fattoria

About 10 minutes away. A bakery café in downtown Petaluma, known for its bread and pastry, with a café menu for lunch. Open Thursday to Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:10 · Karah Estate Vineyard

About 15 minutes away. The Karah family planted its first vines here in 1991, and winemaker Lisa Albert farms 36 acres regeneratively on a 144-acre estate in the wind-carved hills of the Petaluma Gap; the 2024 Estate Pinot Noir took bronze at the 2026 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Relaxed tastings look out over the vines, and the fee is paid at the tasting room. Open Friday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; walk-ins welcome.

3:30 · Back to your hotel

Back in Petaluma by 3:30 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. This day works Friday to Sunday, when Parum Leo and Karah Estate are open; Azari is by appointment, so we confirm it when we book.

About $30 to $40 per person at Parum Leo, paid directly to the winery; the Azari and Karah Estate tasting fees are to be verified upon reservation.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
