Petaluma Gap · Sonoma County
A family estate built to resemble a Tuscan villa in the hills west of Petaluma, open by appointment, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Kamal and Parichehr Azari came to the United States planning to return home to Iran. When the Iran-Iraq War broke out, they stayed and committed to building a life here, and in 1988 they came into possession of the land in the hills west of Petaluma that became Azari Vineyards.
The family planted its own vineyards and built its own facilities from the ground up to match their vision. They make small lots of wine, led by Pinot Noir and a cool-climate Shiraz, along with rosé, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, from the windy Petaluma Gap.
The estate is laid out like a Tuscan villa, with panoramic views over the hills and large succulents throughout the grounds. Visits are by appointment and personal, in the spirit of the family's Persian hospitality, and the estate also has a guest house for overnight stays.
Azari Vineyards does not publish its tasting fee; it is confirmed when the appointment is made.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a Petaluma hotel such as Hotel Petaluma or the Sheraton Sonoma Wine Country Petaluma.
Hotel Petaluma, a restored 1923 hotel downtown, is about 10 minutes from Azari Vineyards, and the Sheraton Sonoma Wine Country Petaluma, overlooking the Petaluma River marina, about 15. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
A tasting by appointment at the family estate, with Pinot Noir and cool-climate Shiraz and the views over the western hills.
About 20 minutes away. Nan McEvoy's organic olive ranch, founded in 1990 on a former dairy in the hills west of Petaluma, with its own olive mill and sculpture from the family's collection along the orchard paths. The 75-minute cart tour of the ranch is $95, and wine flights on the stone patio over the pond are $30 to $48. Tours need a reservation 48 hours ahead; open daily, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
About 15 minutes away. A bakery café in downtown Petaluma, known for its bread and pastry, with a café menu for lunch. Open Thursday to Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 15 minutes away. Kevin and Tuesday Koch's family farm and winery on Adobe Road, with gardens, farm animals and sheep that graze between the vines, and a new tasting room for its small-batch Sonoma County wines. The winery does not publish a tasting fee. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Back in Petaluma by 3:30 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Azari tastings are by appointment, and Della Fattoria and Koch are both open Thursday to Sunday, so this day works Thursday to Sunday.
About $95 per person for the McEvoy Ranch cart tour, plus the Azari and Koch tasting fees, confirmed when we book, each paid directly to the winery.
