About the Winery

Lampson Family Wines is the work of two sisters, Catie Kuckuk and Erin Kuh, who started it to preserve their family's legacy for their children and grandchildren. The wines come entirely from Stone Ranch Vineyard, which their great-grandfather Everett D. Lampson Sr. and his two sons bought from the descendants of the pioneer Long and Stone families in 1941 and 1959. Their parents managed the vineyard from 1997 to 2019, and their brother, Andy Furlong, has run it since 2020 with three generations of the same vineyard crew.

Stone Ranch climbs the foothills on the western side of Alexander Valley, halfway between Geyserville and Healdsburg, and its east-facing slopes catch the soft morning light and are among the first in the valley to fall into afternoon shade. The first Zinfandel was planted in the mid-1960s, and the 87 acres now grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Primitivo. Consulting winemaker Lisa Bishop Forbes was director of winemaking at Chalk Hill Estate, and Andy is adding compost, cover crops, sheep and goats to the farming.

A visit here is a walk, not a tasting bar. The family leads a relaxing one-mile loop through the vineyard, with views across Alexander Valley to Mount St. Helena and Geyser Peak, and it ends with a tasting of the wines grown right around you. Children are welcome, which makes it a good stop for families, and private tastings are by appointment.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:15 a.m. from a Healdsburg hotel such as Hotel Trio or Hotel Healdsburg.

10:15 · Pickup at Hotel Trio or Hotel Healdsburg

Hotel Trio, on Dry Creek Road on the north side of Healdsburg, is about 10 minutes from Lampson, and Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, about 15. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:30 · Lampson Family Wines

The vineyard walk, a one-mile loop through Stone Ranch with views up the valley, ending with a tasting of the family's wines.

11:50 · Starlite Vineyards

About 20 minutes away. A six-acre hilltop vineyard planted far more densely than most in California, making small lots of European-style wines since 2003, from a Bordeaux-style Cabernet to a Condrieu-style Viognier, and poured at restaurants such as Gary Danko and The Restaurant at Meadowood. Visits are arranged with the tasting room; the fee is confirmed when we book.

12:55 · Lunch at Jimtown and Then Sum

About 5 minutes away. A café on Highway 128 in the middle of Alexander Valley, serving breakfast, brunch and lunch, with tables inside and out. Open every day except Wednesday, until 4 p.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:25 · Chalk Hill Estate

About 25 minutes away. Fred Furth founded Chalk Hill in 1972 after spotting the land from his plane; more than two-thirds of the 1,300-acre estate is left wild, and tastings are poured in an elevated tasting room and on a patio looking out over the vines. The Taste of Estate Flight of four reserve wines is $75, about 90 minutes. Open daily 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; reservations encouraged.

3:55 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 4:20 p.m.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Jimtown is closed on Wednesday, so this day works every other day, and it ends around 4:20; Lampson and Starlite are by appointment, so we confirm both when we book.

About $75 per person for Chalk Hill Estate; the Lampson and Starlite fees are to be verified upon reservation, each paid directly to the winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
