Screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen, who wrote The Karate Kid, Taps, The Transporter and Taken, came to Sonoma in 1980 to celebrate the sale of his first screenplay. Hiking the southern Mayacamas Mountains, he found 280 remote acres with no roads, water or electricity and views to San Francisco Bay, and bought the land a week later with the money from that sale.
Viticulturist Phil Coturri planted about 40 acres in fractured volcanic rock, and for years the grapes were sold to other Sonoma wineries. In 1996 a fire burned half the vines and Kamen's home. He replanted with new Cabernet clones and rootstocks, stopped selling fruit and began making his own wine; the first Kamen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was released in 1999. Mark Herold has made the wines since the 2003 vintage.
The estate is high in the Moon Mountain District, and the tasting room is just off the historic Sonoma Plaza. Guests can drop in at the tasting bar for a flight of estate wines, book a seated tasting with cheese and charcuterie, or reserve the Sky Deck Chef's Pairing up at the mountain vineyard.
$35 for the Signature Flight and $50 for the Premier Flight of library or limited wines at the tasting bar, each waived with a three-bottle purchase. $90 for the Seated Immersion, four wines with cheese and charcuterie. $150 for the Sky Deck Chef's Pairing, four wines with a chef's pairing at the estate vineyard.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
